CO2 Laser Tube Replacement Instructions

Replacing a CO2 laser tube involves several careful steps to ensure safety and proper function. Begin by draining the water system and disconnecting the hoses, then remove the old tube and install the new one with precise alignment. Reconnect the anode and cathode wires, secure everything, and refill the chiller. Finally, power up the machine and check for beam alignment to ensure optimal performance.

Important: Before starting, unplug your machine or disconnect it from the main power supply to ensure safety.

1. Drain the Water System

  • Locate the water drain, typically found at the rear lower section of the machine.
  • Drain any remaining water from the system to prevent spillage.

2. Disconnect Water Hoses

  • Locate the two water hoses connected to the laser tube.
  • Pinch and secure the water lines using zip ties to prevent water from spilling during removal.

3. Remove Water Lines

  • Detach the water hoses from the laser tube once they are secured.

4. Locate the Anode and Cathode Wires

  • The anode is the red wire beneath a large red cap on the left side of the tube (when facing the rear of the machine).
  • The cathode is the black wire on the right side of the tube. (See the figure below for clarification.)

5. Disconnect Anode and Cathode Wires

  • Remove the cap and any electrical tape securing the anode and cathode wires to the laser tube.
  • Detach both wires from the tube.
  • Note: Some models have screw connections for the anode and cathode, while others may have fixed connections (which will require you to cut the cathode wire). The anode wire does not need to be cut.

6. Anode Wire Disconnection (If Applicable)

  • If the anode wire is hardwired, trace the red wire back to a white joint that allows disconnection without cutting.
  • Important: Inspect the new laser tube before tracing the wires, as some new tubes may use screw-on connections, requiring both wires to be cut.

7. Remove Top Bracket Screws

  • Unscrew the four screws holding the top brackets over the laser tube (refer to the picture below for location details).

8. Extract the Old Laser Tube

  • Once the brackets and screws are removed, carefully extract the old laser tube.
  • Tip: Measure the distance from the laser tube's cathode face to the mirror face to help align the new tube correctly.
  • Also, take note of the water inlet and outlet orientation to install the new tube in the same position.

9. Install the New Laser Tube

  • Align the new laser tube in the same position as the old one, ensuring proper alignment of the cathode face to the mirror and the correct orientation for the water inlet and outlet.

10. Reinstall Brackets and Secure Screws

  • Reinstall the brackets and secure the screws to hold the new laser tube in place.
  • Apply light pressure on the bracket while tightening the screws to ensure the tube is securely held.

11. Reconnect Anode and Cathode Wires

  • Reinstall the anode and cathode wires:some text
    • If the cathode wire was cut, reconnect using either soldering or a butt connector (heat shrink and solder provide the best connection).
    • If your tube uses screw-on connectors, strip the wire ends and wrap them around the screws before securing.

12. Reconnect the Anode Wire

  • Reconnect the anode wire in the same manner it was removed.
  • Note: If the anode was hardwired and your new laser tube uses screw connectors, strip the wire carefully and wrap it around the screw before securing it.

13. Secure Wires with Electrical Tape

  • Wrap electrical tape around both the anode and cathode wire ends to prevent arcing and damage to the laser tube.

14. Install the Red Cap

  • Install the red cover over the anode connection.

15. Reconnect Water Lines

  • Reconnect the water hoses to the new laser tube.

16. Refill the Chiller

  • Refill the chiller with deionized or distilled water. You may mix in specific anti-freeze if your machine is in a cold environment, though it's best to keep the machine in a warm, temperature-controlled area.

17. Reconnect Power and Test the Laser

  • Reinstall the power plugs and power up the machine.
  • Important: You may need to perform beam alignment after installing the new tube, as slight manufacturing differences may require adjustment.

18. Contact Support (If Needed)

  • If beam alignment is required or you need further assistance, contact us for detailed alignment instructions.
